Avril Lavigne est née le 27 septembre 1984, à Belleville dans l'Ontario. Elle passe toute son enfance à Napanee, une petite ville de 5 000 habitants de l'Ontario. Fille de Judith Loshaw, native d'Ontario et de Jean-Claude Lavigne, originaire du Québec[réf. nécessaire] (Lavigne est un nom d'origine canadienne-française), elle a un grand frère (Matthew) et une petite sœur (Michelle). Son nom et son prénom sont français mais Avril ne parle pas un mot de français même s'il s'agit de la langue de son père.

Elle décide de devenir chanteuse dès son plus jeune âge. Soutenue par ses parents, c'est à l'âge de douze ans qu'elle écrit ses premières chansons. Passionnée par la musique, elle emprunte la guitare sèche de son père jusqu'au jour où elle reçoit la sienne, apprenant à en jouer d'elle-même. À partir de ce moment, elle y consacre une majorité de son temps venant de sa propre initiative. Elle joue sans cesse la même chanson : Fly Away de Lenny Kravitz. Puis, elle commence à écrire ses propres chansons : « J'ai commencé à écrire à 12 ans et mes premières chansons ont commencé à exister alors que j'en avais 13. Mais je crois avoir toujours écrit des poèmes. Je les ai tous gardés et je pense que je pourrais transformer certains d'entre eux en chansons. Certains ne sont en effet pas mauvais ». Inspirée par ses propres expériences, ses textes se mêlent à une musique influencée par les Goo Goo Dolls ou encore Green Day. Vers 12 ans, elle chante dans la chorale de l'église de son village et se produit lors de petits festivals et événements locaux.

Le recruteur Antonio "LA" Reid, de RCA/Arista, la découvre lors d'un de ces festivals et lui propose un contrat. Avril Lavigne a alors seize ans lorsqu'elle arrête ses études pour se consacrer pleinement à la musique.

Elle quitte alors sa famille, ses amis et sa petite ville pour s'installer à Manhattan et écrire son premier album. Cependant, elle entre en désaccord avec ses employeurs du moment et s'oppose aux rythmes et aux paroles qu'on lui propose. Elle part donc s'établir à Los Angeles, où elle fait la connaissance de Clif Magness, producteur et gérant. Un an plus tard, elle sort Complicated qui reste à ce jour son plus gros succès parmi tous ses singles. Elle livre son tout premier album solo, Let Go, en juin 2002, qui rencontre un très grand succès et arrive deuxième au Billboard 200 trois mois après sa sortie [1].
Elle entame alors une tournée mondiale en 2003, Try to shut me up Tour, qui se joue à guichets fermés. A l'issue de cette tournée sort le DVD My World, qui contient son concert à Buffalo, des documentaires sur les coulisses et l'intégrale de ses clips. Avec sa voix, sa sincérité, son look de skateuse, et son talent pour l'écriture, Avril séduit un grand nombre de fans. Au final l'album s'est écoulé à plus de 16 millions de copies à travers le monde et reçu de nombreuses récompenses.
